World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day

The theme "Unite. Act. Eliminate." calls for action on this January 30 to tackle these 21 diseases, that affect 20% of the world's population.

30 January 2024 - 30 January 2024

Annualy, on January 30th World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day is celebrated in commemoration of the presentation of the first WHO roadmap and the 2012 London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). This year's theme, "Unite. Act. Eliminate", is a call-for-action from the NTDs community to "Come together to achieve our goals", to assess "What we need to act effectively", and to reflect on "Where we are on elimination". It is inspired by President Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, in a piece published in Health Policy Watch in July 2023.

"We want to end neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). To achieve this, we need sustainable financing for NTDs. Investing in NTDs is a global health and development success story. So far, 50 countries have eliminated an NTD, showing progress is possible. In 2020, 600 million fewer people required interventions against NTDs than in 2010. Yet, for some time, a lack of resources has been seen as a significant barrier to the control, elimination, and eradication of NTDs. This challenge has only been intensified by COVID-19 which has caused severe delays and disruption to NTD programmes, as well as a massive repurposing and diversion of resources".

The Chagas Global Coalition will be joining this day through our ChagatChat, a project developed last year as a virtual space where we talk about Neglected Tropical Diseases with people from the Chagas disease community.

Thanks to the organizations working relentlessly to eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases as a public health problem, during these weeks a number of events have been organized to celebrate this years's World Day, to call for participation. Join on January 30th and share its content under the hashtag #WorldNTDDay:
