Diagnosis and treatment in areas with active vector-borne transmission (Santiago del Estero)

Fundación Mundo Sano

Area of Activity: Diagnóstico y/o biomarcadores, Treatment
Type of Project: Implementation

Mundo Sano works to provide access to diagnosis and treatment in areas with active vector-borne transmission of Chagas disease. The foundation has been working toward this goal in Añatuya (Santiago del Estero province, Argentina) since 2002. In endemic areas, in addition to diagnosing and treating the population, insect control and surveillance are essential to eliminate the risk of reinfection.

Thanks to the foundation’s ongoing work, the percentage of homes in peripheral neighbourhoods of Añatuya in which the disease-bearing vector (kissing bug) was present has decreased from 38% to 1%. Treatment is currently provided by a municipal medical office in Añatuya and by Hospital de Colonia Dora.

Dozens of people have already been treated for Chagas disease in Santiago del Estero in 2015.
